He made his debut with Italy’s Udine Rex team in 1991 and remained there until 1993. Afterward, he played a season for Libertas Livorno before being traded to Pallacanestro Varese, where he stayed the longest, from 1994 to 2002.
Following his time at Varese, he played for Fortitudo Bologna from 2002 to 2005 but ended up in Spain’s Basket Zaragoza later that same year.
In 2005, he transferred to Russia’s BC Khimki until 2007. Then, he went back to Italy and joined Sicily’s Orlandina Basket until 2008. He played for Servolana Trieste in 2009 and then returned to Orlandina Basket in 2010, where he ended his professional career as a basketball player.
6. He was a part of major basketball events
When Pozzecco joined Italy’s national basketball team in 1997, he proved how skilled he was in his field by participating in numerous major basketball events.
His most famous event is probably the 2004 Winter Olympics held in Athens, Greece, where Italy won the silver medal after being defeated by Argentina, who secured the gold.
He was a two-time champion of the Italian League and Italian Super Cup, winning both titles in 1999 and 2005. He participated in the Italian All Star Game four times, in 1997-98, 2001, and 2004.

8. He had conflicts with his coaches

When he was still with Fortitudo Bologna, a disagreement between him and Coach Jasmin Repeša occurred. As a result, he was removed from the team and decided to play for the Spanish team Basket Zaragoza.
Another instance was when Pozzecco was still on the national team with coach Bogdan Tanjevic. It is said that it all began with Davide Bonora and Pozzecco being rivals. When Coach Tanjevic talked to him and said he was not at a Euro-level as a player, Pozzecco was subsequently excluded from the 1999 Eurobasket in France.
9. He tried joining the NBA
Like many other basketball players, Gianmarco also aimed to play in the NBA. So, he participated in the 2001 NBA Summer League. During this season, NBA teams looked for possible new players to join their team through various summer rosters.
During that time, Pozzecco played for the Toronto Raptors, showcasing his skills as a point guard, particularly in assists where he excelled.
Unfortunately, his skills were not sufficient for an NBA career, as he remained undrafted, and his attempt was unsuccessful.
10. Pozzecco was a part of Varese’s momentous win
When Gianmarco Pozzecco joined Pallacanestro Varese, the team was aiming for their 10th title in the Italian League. The team’s 9th championship victory had occurred in 1978, so the desire to secure their 10th title was truly crucial.
In 1999, with his famous red hair, Pozzecco played for the Varese Roosters and won all three games against Benetton Treviso. At that time, the young Pozzecco was considered one of the key players contributing to the team’s triumphant moment.
11. Gianmarco Pozzecco is also a host and a broadcaster
After retiring from his professional career, Pozzecco took some time off to pursue other jobs, such as hosting. It was in 2001 when Italia 1 televised the entertainment program Candid & Video Show. Gianmarco Pozzecco hosted the show alongside Italian actress Samantha De Grenet.

It was in the 2011 Italian film L’amore fa male (Love Hurts), directed by Mirca Violla and starring Stefania Rocca, Paolo Briguglia, and Nicole Grimaudo.
The story is about a frustrated actress named Germana, who has an older, rich lawyer lover. She and her doctor friend, Elizabeth, whose marriage is in trouble, go to Sicily where the rollercoaster story unfolds.
While Gianmarco’s part was short, as he played Elizabeth’s new boyfriend, it simply shows that this basketball icon can also act.
13. He became a coach at 40
Gianmarco Pozzecco is the 22nd and current coach of Italy’s men’s senior national basketball team, known as Gli Azzuri or The Blues.
His coaching journey began in 2012 with his last team as a player, Orlandina Basket. He has also coached for Varese, Fortitudo Bologna, and Dinamo Sassari, where they won the 2019 Italian Basketball Cup.
In addition to coaching in Italy, Pozzecco has served as an assistant coach for the Croatian team Cedevita Zagreb.
14. He’s been forced to leave the court during games
In the 2022 EuroBasket game in Berlin, during the Round of 16, Italia faced a strong contender, Serbia. Gianmarco must have felt all the pressure building up in his system, knowing how passionate he was as a player and even more so as a coach.
His bench received the first technical foul right at the start of the game, followed by another in the third quarter. At that point, he was forced to leave the bench. However, before doing so, he hugged and gave high-fives to his players and then headed to the tunnel, tears in his eyes.
Another incident occurred during the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines when Italy faced the Dominican Republic. Pozzecco lost his cool, gesturing wildly to his players and receiving technical fouls.
Eventually, after he took off his blazer to protest a call, he received a third technical foul and was ejected from the bench just minutes before the end of the first half.
15. He had a canceled wedding
Gianmarco Pozzecco was once in a long relationship, which was with the famous Italian volleyball player Maurizia Cacciatori. Their relationship was so great that it led to the decision to tie the knot.
However, ten days before the big day, in the summer of 2004, the wedding was canceled. Gifts were returned although messed up.

16. Pozzecco’s marriage was almost a secret
It was in the middle of the pandemic, in June 2021, when Gianmarco Pozzecoco married a Spanish woman named Tanya Robles. The wedding happened in Formenta with very few people invited at the reception because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
The couple welcomed their firstborn, a daughter named Gala, in February 2023.
There’s not much on social media about Mrs. Pozzecco, but to Gianmarco, she’s the woman who can manage his temper and calm him down.
17. He considers himself a Triestino
Despite being born in Gorizia in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Pozzecco grew up in Udine, where he developed his basketball skills. However, Pozzecco considers himself a Triestino.
